Last eve the sky was clear
As I lay my head to sleep
Late into the darkness
Awakened I was
Not by little excited feet
Wanting to see
The annual parade
Televised
For our viewing pleasure
No it was
The pitter patter
Rain falling above my head
The howling of wind
The thump of a branch
From a tree
I look out to see
The frothing gray waters
Blown into a dither
By the breeze
I walk through the house
No plans for a big dinner
And I sigh
Knowing your happy face
Will not be at the table
No football scores
Or children racing
Though
All is not lost
Thankful I am
For a roof
I have above me
My wife and best friend
To keep me laughing
And my fifteen years old
Daughter
To remind me
It is my fault
She is stuck on an island
So with that
My prayers are said
And this is my Amen
Time to go
Take shots of
The excited sea
As I enjoy
This thanksgiving
By the beach.
