Plans Change A Story 10

Having Christina fidgeting in the bed beside me did not let me get to sleep.  Finally I sat up and asked if she was going to sleep.  Turning on the light she looked at me before burying her face in a pillow into which she screamed.  When she was done, I asked if she was done throwing a tantrum.  Adjusting herself to sit up next to me she asked how I could think about sleeping.  I told her I was tired and needed sleep.  She did not say anything for almost ten minutes then told me she wanted to work out our marriage.  Climbing out of the bed and moving to the second bed I smiled and said that was interesting as if I remembered correctly she divorced me and left me with nothing.  She asked if I was mad at her for that and I asked why should I be mad as apparently in her mind I was also dead, which if she was never told I was dead I did not know why she thought that.  Before she could reply I got out bed, went over to her and kissing her on the forehead as I tucked her in I told her to get some sleep and just accept the fact until the day I die I loved her.

As I sat back down on my bed she asked if I had been serious about marrying her again?  I watched as her eyes kept scanning down my body, when she shivered I asked if she was still cold.  She turned red and shook her head.  Shrugging I lay back down and told her to get some sleep.  I watched her turn down her lip and then told me I did not answer her question.  I finally got up and went back and sat on her bed and leaning over her I told her she should not need me to answer that question but since she did yes I had meant it but finding out I no longer had a wife, a home, or a career put things into a perspective I had never had to deal with.  Sitting up again she asked how I could not be mad.  I told her in the greater scheme of things unless I found out she was beyond that attempt on my life her making a decision that I had been gone too long and it was time for her to move on was not surprising,  When she started crying and for the most part talking incoherently I scooted her over and climbed in next to her.  I had not intended to but to get her to calm down I kissed her.  My emotions which I had kept in check were released.  Two hours later we had moved to the second bed to sleep.  I was crying and fell asleep with Christina wiping away my tears.  I awoke with a start, it took a few moments as I jumped out of bed to realize where I was.  Christina was not in the bed; or in the room.  I quickly showered and got dressed and quickly packed; double checking the room and wiping it down out of habit.  The sheets I ignored and double checking again that I had my ID and the funds borrowed and the few dollars I had stashed in the overnight bag; I counted three times and came up short a fifty dollar bill.

For years all the cash I had used had to be accounted for and if lost it brought a reprimand from the accounting staff either from Field Engineering Services or the agency if I was using their funds. I had to remind myself I no longer served either of those masters even though the one I was technically the master I had kept that low key as it had grown.  Having worked under an assumed name for so many years it struck me then I would be going to be using my birth name which had no history.  I was just getting ready to leave when Christina came back with breakfast.  She saw that I was packed and asked if my plans had changed about staying another day.  I looked down and told her I was sorry about last night but I really had to do some shopping and figure out what I was going to do.  She pointed to the bag and told me I had money; I looked down and knew how long that would last even if I used it sparingly which with some of the items I would be buying would eat up a large chunk of that cash not to mention the week in Cabo.  I had several other stashes of cash and ID's in various places around the globe and this country but hearing that my stash of ID's had been removed from the nearest safety deposit box I was not sure I wanted to retrieve the rest or expend the cash to get there only to find out they had been discovered and being watched.  I was looking at Christina and after giving her a kiss on the cheek told her I would be okay.  She looked down at the breakfast she had brought back and asked about us.  I did not want to say it but unsure of how else to explain it I told her she had divorced me after telling me she would not ever do that.  Proclaiming her intentions to have the Good Lord to damn it all to hell very loudly she sent the meal flying.

She barred my way and asked if I knew what she had gone through, I told her apparently several lovers and a couple of really good attorneys.  I knew the slap was coming and let it but did not expect her to hit me in my side which I was not ready for and I doubled over,  I knew the stitches had been ripped and did not care but seeing my shirt turning red changed Christina into the caring doctor. I did not let her and through on the wind breaker. and left the room with her following me.  At the front desk I told the clerk there was another change of plans and I would be paying for the room one more night but would not be using it.  I stayed inside the attached shopping center to the south end before I exited.  Christina followed me as I walked and told me she had a car at the hotel.  I smiled and said I did not and was free to go where I pleased.  She used my old phone and called her house and told someone to get her car from the hotel.  My first stop of the day was to the prayer chapel a few blocks from the hotel. I did not hesitate to walk in and go up front to kneel.  I said my prayers asking forgiveness for last night and walked back out dropping a bill in the box.  I made my way to a small popular breakfast joint where I had gotten to know the owners and staff over the years. Sarah one of the longtime waitresses recognized me in spite of my changing my hair color and seeing Christina asked if she was my wife.  I told her no, as I was no longer married and this was Christina.  Christina smiled and after we sat down she asked if I was going to tell everyone we were not married.  I smiled and told her I only told one person, and she pointed back toward the church and I told her He already knew so I did not need to tell him, I just had to apologize for my wayward behavior.  Christina asked if that would be my not calling her or my staying away for almost fifteen year.

I shook my head and told her I had apologized to her for that but to the man upstairs I was apologizing for sleeping with a woman I was not married to.  She looked away for some time and then after mt breakfast was served she asked if this was it.  I told her as I ate my oatmeal I had no idea what it was but if she was referring to what our relationship would be that was going to take time.  She wanted to say something else but held back as we finished our meal.  I paid and then after giving a tip I started to leave and then saw the two men sitting across the street.  I told Christina I needed to use the restroom and slipped out the back and ran down behind the next building and crossed the street and came at the car from the front and to the far side.  Reaching in I pulled the keys out of the ignition tossed them into the bushes, and then darted back across the street hopped the rail grabbed my bag and headed out the side door.  Christina who had not been paying attention was following as fast as she could.  When she caught up I caught a cab and had it drop me off by the airport where I went inside and walked the length and walked out and caught an airport shuttle bus to a resort down valley.  As the shuttle pulled out I saw the two SUV's pull up to the airport.  I sat back in the seat and felt inside the windbreaker, I was bleeding again.  Once I checked in at the resort I grabbed their shuttle and had the driver take me to the closest shopping area where Christina went to the huge discount box store while I went to buy a couple of more throw away phones with different carriers and a couple of computers, a small portable printer and paper along with a Camera kit and an additional long lens.

Back at the resort as I removed the blood stained shirt, Christina told me I should really go see a doctor.  I nodded and said I would be fine and and after cleaning off in the shower, I asked if she had hired security.  She said the company had assigned her a detail.  I nodded and told her she might want to call them and tell them I did not kidnap her and apologize to those two men.  Pulling out my old phone she called the office while on speaker and had to remind them who she was and that she was okay.  A male voice came on the phone and asked where she was; she looked at me and said she was with her husband trying to work things out.  I motioned for her to hang up.  When she did I turned off the phone and made a call from a throwaway phone as if I was calling in.  A voice I recognized came on and I asked her if there was anything new happening.  She asked me where I had been as the could use some real help around the office as the clowns the new owner had hired had not a flipping clue what they were doing.  I asked who the new owner was and got an earful about how the old owner's wife took him to the cleaners and she might know a thing or two about cutting people open but she had not a clue when it came to running an engineering company.  I asked her if I was still on the payroll and I could almost see her smile when she told me no one ever told her to take me off so yes I was still on the payroll and not knowing where to send my checks anymore she had opened an account on my behalf under her maiden name.  I asked her if there was a crew working on the west coast and she sighed and said yes the new clown had hired an overzealous director of security who brought on a bunch of his boys who were on babysitting detail on that overpriced playground the new owner bought with the old bosses money.  I told her to stop paying them as of right now and suspend their cell phones and any email accounts as per my instructions, and to tell the clown he needed to find a new job and if there was a problem to call my old number and leave a message.  She told me they were using company vehicles and I told her to send out notices to all of them and tell them their services were no longer needed and they had twenty four hours to return all company property.

Christina only looked at me and shook her head and said she guessed she missed that I was actually an employee but my girlfriend was right the new owner had not a clue.  I nodded and said that woman should know since she grew up with the new owner and saw her at every family reunion.  My throw away rang and I heard another voice ask me what I was up to and I informed the man he needed to pack his bags and be on his way and when I walked into my office and found something missing he needed to run as fast as he could and hide in the deepest hole and seal himself in and he needed to take his amateurs with him.  I was told those boys were the best and I asked him if they were the best then how come they did not know where the assignment was,  I dropped the phone and crushed it under my boot.  Christina told me she had to hire somebody and was told he was the best.  I nodded and asked who told her he was the best and she said she asked her her friends for recommendations and this guy was ex military.  I did not say anything as I pulled out the computers and then making use of one of the smart phones which broke out of jail I started doing my research.  I told Christina she might want to call the children on their cell phones and tell them to pack for this week's field trip and the call whoever was in charge and have all her prison keepers meet at the house and wait for instructions from Mr. C.  Christina said she had heard of Mr.C but had not yet had the chance to meet him.  Waving my hand I told her actually she had just spent a night with him.
